Messi’s Return to Barcelona, a Huge Possibility: Sources
Lionel Messi’s future continues to dominate the headlines, with a potential return to his old club Barcelona, as the Argentinian superstar’s contract with PSG expires at the end of the season.
There have been countless rumors moving around about the 35-year-old’s next move. Links to the MLS, Saudi Arabia, and a potential return to Barcelona have been doing the rounds for quite some time now, according to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna.
It is reported that PSG have already prepared a renewal of a contract for Messi, however, he will make a decision after understanding the Parisian club’s project.
As things stand, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s main priority for the summer transfer window is to return to Barcelona, according to Santi Aouna.
Reports have emerged that PSG and Messi had a verbal agreement over a contract in December, but things have changed since then. Unconfirmed reports state that relations between the Argentinean superstar and PSG manager have soured in the recent past, which paves the way for him to look for other options – with a return to Barcelona an option.
Moreover, it is believed that Messi is in regular contact with former teammate and current Barcelona Manager Xavi Hernandez, while meetings between his father and club president Joan Laporta have taken place. Despite the optimism circulating in the media, Barcelona club officials have not yet officially announced Messi’s return to the club next season.
Meanwhile, the giant Spanish club’s major challenge to re-sign Messi is its financial fair play situation. Barcelona are under pressure to cut down its wage budget and is facing a battle to register the new contracts of key players such as Gavi, Ronald Araujo, and others.
