OCHA: 20 mln ppl face extreme hunger in Afg in 2023
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that Afghanistan is facing one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises in 2023.
According to OCHA 28 million people are in need in Afghanistan, and the humanitarian organizations have planned to reach 23.7 million of them.
OCHA’s report indicates that 20 million people face extreme hunger in Afghanistan, and 6 million others are facing famine.
The report adds that if the drought enters its third year in Afghanistan, the situation of malnutrition will worsen 20% than now.
OCHA said that 875000 children suffer from extreme malnutrition in 2023, and 2.3 million others will experience malnutrition in a lighter scale.
“A deteriorating economy caused sharp declines in income, rising debt and high unemployment. A staggering 80% of households across Afghanistan have experienced income reduction,” OCHA said.
The news comes as humanitarian organizations have claimed that their assistance have saved the lives of 26.1 million people in Afghanistan in 2022.
