German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday emphasized that his country will not send fighter jets to Ukraine, as Kyiv calls on NATO member states to supply more advanced weapons.
Scholz only agreed on January 18 to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine as the United States pledged to deliver 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. It is also agreed that other European countries send theirs, after weeks of intense debate and mounting pressure from allies on supplying the Ukrainian army to resist the Russian occupation.
“The question of fighter planes does not even arise. I can only advise against getting into a constant bidding war when it comes to weapon systems,” Olaf Scholz said in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
“As soon as a decision (on the tanks) is taken, a new debate starts in Germany” on something else, “that is not serious and undermines the confidence of the citizens in the decisions of the government”, he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately thanked Berlin and Germany for sending sophisticated tanks which will strengthen the Ukrainian army’s firepower on the ground and called for more, including fighter jets and long-range missiles.
In the interview, the German Premier warns about the escalations of war with Russia. He reiterated that “there is no war between Russia and NATO”. To avoid further escalations, he believes negotiation with President Putin is of paramount importance.
He also stated that as long as Russia continues to wage the war by relentlessly attacking Ukraine, the situation will not change.
Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict thousands of Ukrainians have been internally displaced, hundreds of people from both sides have lost their lives, and several cities have been demolished in Ukraine.
With the U.S. and NATO member states continuously providing military supplies for the Ukrainian army, there seems no end to the ongoing war in the coming future.
