US Pledges to Help Pakistan Amid Economic Crisis
The United States on Thursday pledged to continue assisting Pakistan to overcome the economic crisis and post-flood challenges.
The U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, ensured his government’s support for Pakistan during his visit with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday.
“The United States with continue to support Pakistan’s efforts for economic development and post-flood recovery, which has adversely affected the country’s economy,” the Prime Minister’s Office quoted in an official press release.
For his part, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked the U.S. for its continued support for Pakistan’s post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation, and for donating to Pakistan during these difficult times.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Imran Khan accuses the United States of hatching a conspiracy in collaboration with the current ruling alliance — the Pakistan Democratic Movement, which resulted in the toppling of his government.
The premier reiterated that Pakistan places significant importance on its enduring relations with the U.S., and reaffirmed to the expansion of economic and trade engagement with Washington. He also added that it is crucial for U.S. and Pakistan to coordinate in achieving both countries’ shared goals in the region and beyond.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden has already expressed his commitment to support Pakistan in flood recovery, economic revival, and expanding economic and investment between the countries.
This comes as Pakistan is currently faced with a major economic crisis. Currently, the ruling regime is trying its best to meet the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a ninth loan, to ease the economic pressure.
Energy crisis and security are the other two major challenges that government needs to resolve. The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) possess threats to the internal security of Pakistan, as its militant groups have accelerated their brutal attacks across the country since the end of their ceasefire with the government in November.
