Afghanistan To Receive Wheat, Fuel, Gas From Russia

The Taliban Ministry of Commerce and Industry is expecting to receive fuel, gas, and wheat from Russia by the end of this month, following a provisional deal that was signed between the two parties in September 2022.

The Taliban signed their first known major international economic deal with Russia while they are still facing western economic sanctions.

Afghan economy has shrunk by 20% to 30% since August 2021. The humanitarian situation remains dire and the security situation is fragile. Millions of Afghans are struggling to survive after crucial foreign aid was halted and the US froze USD 9 billion in assets belonging to the central bank.

The Taliban are in negotiations for trade deals with Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

In July 2022, they signed a fuel contract with an Iranian private company to combat the soaring fuel price in the country.
