Durable peace cannot be achieved without the active participation of women: India

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, T S Tirumurti, addressing the UN Security Council Open Debate on Women and Peace said that durable peace cannot be achieved in Afghanistan without the active participation of women.

Ambassador T S Tirumurti, referring to discriminatory acts towards women and deprivation of girls of education said discriminatory social and political structures have made violence against women systemic and deeply entrenched, making women easy targets in situations of armed conflict.

Indian ambassador while made the remarks that prior to that the United Nations Human Rights Council called the situation of women in Afghanistan as systematic oppression.

The news comes as Taliban repeatedly have said that they do not have any problem with women’s participation within an “Islamic framework.”
