Friendship Signal to Gain Mercy: Taliban’s Style of Friendship and Enmity

In the latest attempt by Taliban leaders to win America’s support, the group’s Interior Minister, also known as the caliph, has stated that they do not look at the United States as their enemy.

Perhaps, the so-called caliph does not seem to know that in the international area, even in basic human relations, men do not base themselves on the negative message when they are in a weak position, but start with the positive approach to gain the trust of their opponent. This means that it is not enough to not consider someone as an enemy to establish a relationship, but it is important to learn how to establish a friendly relationship, especially if you are dependent so desperately.

But Americans, like everyone else in the world would ask, “What are the standard of Taliban’s friendship and enmity?” Until yesterday, they were arguing and fighting against the United States and NATO, labeling them as aggressors and enemies, and under that pretext, they launched a war that is marks as one of the bloodiest periods in the contemporary history of Afghanistan. Were those slogans false? So what is the response of Taliban leaders to the thousands of innocent lives and people who have lost their beloved ones as a result of the so called political jihad of Taliban? How can an “aggressor and criminal enemy” suddenly become a friend?

All these years, the Taliban has argued that alliance with the United States is against Islam and that friendship with United States is contrary to the principle of supremacy. The principles that are the pillars to build and interact with the international community, but Taliban used to reject them all and kill the supporters of these principals. The Taliban had escalated to the point where, in addition to former government employees, they allowed the killing of employees of institutions, contractors, and anyone who had a minor affiliation with foreign companies and organizations as a crime of friendship and allegiance to the enemies of Islam. So, what will be the fate of the principle of guardianship?

Some experts believe that “Khalifa/caliph” and “Amir al-Mu’minin” play two uncoordinated instruments. In their views, the Haqqani network believes in the importance of the United States, sending a signal that the Taliban are the children of the same father who had allied with the CIA in the 1980s, and that they hope that these signals will shift the balance of power within the Taliban in favour of the network, and that the “caliph” will be able to marginalize and push Amir al-Mu’minin to the corner.

But the more fundamental question for the Afghan people is, when you do not look at the United States as an enemy, why have you become hostile to the people who share your religion and homeland? Why do you not know any language other than war and guns to talk to the citizens of this land? Why do you deprive people of their simplest rights? Why have you close the schools’ doors to the girls of this land? Why do you suppress the media? Why do you constantly destroy civil institutions? Why, wherever you see opposition, you pursue a policy of forced displacement, which is a kind of war crime? What exactly is the criteria and nature of your friendship and enmity?

A total foreign aid dependent and illegitimate government leader tries to portray a picture to cover the crimes he committed against innocent Afghan citizens for during the course of last 20 years. The people whom he rules on yet have not recognized him as a friend, how can he ensure a loyal friendship with nations who are the enemies of his ideology on the bases of which he fought them for 20 years?
