Kabul, Afghanistan – At least six people, including young students, have been killed and 11 further wounded after three blasts targeted a boy’s school in west Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood on Tuesday morning, according to local security officials.
The blast occurred in a Shia Hazara neighborhood, triggering fears among residents following a lull in violence over the cold winter months.
The Ministry of Interior Affair confirmed the blasts near Abdul Raheem Shaheed High School, adding an investigation is underway to determine the perpetrators of the attacks and bring them to justice.
According to the eyewitness, initially a bomb went off near Mumta Tuition Center, followed by two more explosions close to Abdul Raheem Shaheed High School in the area.
Meanwhile, the Emergency Hospital in Kabul said they have received at least seven wounded soon after the blast, with several being in a critical condition.
While the blasts – which occurred in rapid succession – are being investigated, more casualties are feared upon further assessments, according to spokesman Kahlid Zardan and local Emergency Hospital. Several of the wounded were in critical condition.
No group or individual has immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, while recent blast has mostly been claimed by ISIL.
The Controversy of Afghanistan Security
Since the takeover in August 15, 2021, the so-called Islamic Emirate government has repeatedly assured citizens of a non-violent and secured country, but the international officials and analyst say the security threats, including target killings, remain the same.
While the Taliban leadership claim that Afghanistan is now free and independent, risk of rebellion proves otherwise – where many attacks in the past several moths have been claimed by the ISIL (also known as Daesh).
In May 2021, at least 85 people, mainly female students, were killed and roughly 300 others were wounded when three consecutive bombs rocked Dasht-e-Barchi of west Kabul.
The faint-hearted “terrorists” attacked a girl’s school with a car bomb and later two other blasts were also heard in the area, sources said.
Dasht-e-Barchi in west Kabul – a Shia Hazara neighborhood – has frequently been the targets, where majority of the attack were claimed by the ISIL.
