Kabul – The Agriculture and Livestock Department in Kunar province said that they are planting about 500,000 new saplings in the deforested areas of the province.
“We have begun the planting process with the help of 64 locals in the Asmar, Dangam, Manogi, Chapa Dara and other districts of Kunar,” Rohullah Hejran, director of agriculture department’s forests, told Hasht-e Subh.
Hejran added: “With the help of private and public agencies, we had planted about 2 million fruit and non-fruit trees in the forests of Kunar province this year, and we have been provided with 500,000 new saplings for reforestation.”
In the meantime, he emphasizes that the government should put more effort to grow planted trees and seedlings.
“The province had planted about 2,000 trees in the province’s forests, but due to the lack of a regular irrigation system, they were destroyed,” Riyaz Ahmad, a resident of Dangam district in Kunar, told Hasht-e Subh.
According to recent reports, deforestation has taken place in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, and their timber is being smuggled to a number of neighboring countries, especially Pakistan.
