Chelsea took a strong hold of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Lille thanks to a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel opted to deploy Kai Havertz as a striker over Romelu Lukaku, and the decision had an instant impact with Havertz heading home the opening goal after just eight minutes.
Lille had spells of possession in the opening half but were unable to test Edouard Mendy in the Chelsea goal. The Blues then took control of the tie in the 63rd minute as Christian Pulisic finished past Leo Jardim after a fantastic run and pass from N’Golo Kante.
It was a great night for Tuchel’s side but potential injuries to Hakim Ziyech and Mateo Kovacic ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final put a dampener on the result.
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has provided his thoughts on a successful evening on Stamford Bridge.
Seems like he is also happy to see N’Golo Kante playing so well in the second half.
Tuchel said: “It was not the real N’Golo in the last matches, it was good he stepped up today.”
Another clean sheet for Edouard Mendy as he tallies his 14th in 18 games.
