Kabul – Following Joe Biden’s executive order to cut Afghanistan’s foreign exchange reserves and release another part of the country’s funds, Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations Munir Akram said: “Half a loaf of bread is better than nothing.”
“I support the US decision on the release of half of Afghanistan’s frozen assets,” Mr. Munir Akram said. “More money is needed to revive Afghanistan’s collapsed economy.”
On the other hand, Mr. Akram has criticized the US financial system and said: “There is a problem with the financial system in which one country can unilaterally freeze the national assets of another to pay the dubious claims of its citizens.”
Moreover, he added that Pakistan has always been in agreement with the world to free Afghanistan’s frozen assets.
This Pakistani official stressed that freeing Afghanistan’s assets in the US is crucial to reviving and preserving Afghanistan’s economy and saving the lives of millions in the winter, adding that the release of these assets is vital to meet the basic needs of the people, including in the field of health and education.
Meanwhile, on Friday, US President issued an executive order that half of Afghanistan’s foreign exchange reserves would be given to 9/11 victims after court approval, and the other half would be released to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
