Russia and Ukraine Crisis Moving ‘Wrong Way’: UK Defense Secretary

British Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, has warned Russia against invading Ukraine, stressing that “no one will win the war“.

Mr. Wallace made the remarks as the UK recently deployed 1,000 troops to Eastern Europe.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmer will meet NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels today.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is in Moscow for talks with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

The remarks come as Russia reportedly deployed 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s border.

“No one will succeed in invading an independent country,” Wallace told the Radio Times today.

He emphasized that the deployment of more British troops was a part of NATO’s commitment to defending its members.

“The UK also needed to demonstrate to Russia it would “stand by” fellow NATO members and the troops could defend those countries if needed,” Wallace told BBC.

“I think the most important thing here is not the choice of independent nations, but the freedom of that choice,” he told the Radio Times.

“NATO does not seek to select members, but allows nations to choose through their open-door policy,” he added. “What we are really trying to do, whether you are a NATO member or not, is to protect the sovereignty of nations.”

In recent days, tensions between Russia and Western countries have increased due to a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
